Becoming a Craftsman

July 04, 2019

When you first begin making things it doesn’t always go as planned.

Do you remember the first time you got your hands dirty on the pottery wheel? When you sat down with that lump of clay & imagined all the things it could be? Do you remember trying to bring your vision of that sculpture to life? Feeling the clay move beneath your hands, letting it get below your fingernails as you shaped it - neigh - crafted it into the beautiful work of art it was destined to be.

Do you remember being disappointed when things didn’t turn out?

Do you remember throwing out your “beautiful” sculpture?

Do you remember showing up at the wheel the next day?

Do you remember the process of getting better one pot at a time?

Throw. Glaze. Fire. Repeat.

Design. Code. Refactor. Repeat.

It isn’t all that different is it?
